The One That Got Away:
A Close Call on the Road
to a Hole-in-One

One of the greatest thrills in golf is hitting a hole-in-one – or so I am told.
The picture on this page shows the closest I ever came. That shot was on a par-3 at Indian Canyon in Spokane, WA a long time ago (as you can tell by the saddle shoes). It was about 150yds uphill and I hit a very solid 7-iron (which also attests to the fact that it was a long time ago). As soon as I hit it, I knew it had been struck well and the trajectory was a slight fade that was heading right to the pin. Clearly, this was going to be a good shot. It landed about an inch and a half to the left of the hole – but not in. Sigh…
For those of you who have played with me before, I should confirm that, yes… I did make the putt for a birdie.
According to a trusted industry source estimates the odds of an amateur golfer getting a hole-in-one on a hole at least 150 yards
roughly 12,500 to 1. (Hmmm, given how many par 3’s I have played that means my next 5 par 3’s should all be a hole-in-one.) So, when you hit one up in the air and the earth rotates just right and the wind blows just so, and you lean your body to the left (or right) at just the right angle, there is a good chance it’s going in!
My story about the one that did NOT go in, is not nearly as a good as YOUR story about the one that DID go in. So, send your story in and let everyone share in the joy of your greatest moment in golf!
And don’t worry, you will not have to buy drinks for everyone that visits the Mr. Golf Etiquette Hole-in-One page – just for Mr. Golf Etiquette!
